The NJ3 News Scholarship Fund

Supporting Higher Education and 2nd Generation Leadership Potential

The NJ3 NEWS is a Special Fund of the New Jerusalem Community of New Jersey, founded in the spring of 2005. its mission is to promote and enhance the quality of communication between all ages and develop a sustainable structure to allow a more participatory effort from the second generation to take an active leadership role. In time, we expect to support a broad range of needs for our community and progressively initiate a social change in a variety of areas including Social and Economic balance, Educational and Academic guidance, and more.

How is the scholarship distributed? Scholarship is the result of sponsorship coming from various sources, such as concerned parents, custodians of second generation, local businesses representatives or owners of businesses, self-employed people and philanthropists.  The sponsorship is then turned into a scholarship, from deducting the cost of editing and equipments necessary to run the NJ3 NEWS project. These contributions are essentially received from a monthly commitment sponsors make; contributions are changeable from time to time.

The amount is set at $1,000 per recipient; its distribution is scheduled at the third quarter of the year.

 Mission & Governance

Mission. The mission of NJ3 NEWS is to first meet the need of our community to keep it informed on all local, regional, and state events with the purpose to have the members of the community more engaged and active participants in the development and the growth of the same community. Second, is to offer an opportunity to college students of our community and those who are about to enter in college a creative and constructive way to develop their verbal skills through the mastering of 3 things: tonality, physiology, and diction. They develop these useful life skills attributes by becoming the host of the NJ3 NEWS editions.

They learn how to “talk” to a camera, and develop essential skills & qualities that cannot be expressed otherwise, that once mastered, become part of their wholeself. As a way to compensate for their effort, they receive a scholarship.

Goals. We expect to fund projects that act locally, and at a state level to benefit the New Jerusalem Community in the context of a broader view of social, and economic change.  We'll encourage projects that challenge the status quo of pre-dispositional abilities to succeed in favor of a broader perspective for success by empowerment of the powerless that question the conventional wisdom in well-reasoned ways.

Scope.  We expect to support a broad range of community efforts for progressive social change in a variety of areas.

Grantees.  THEY ARE second generation who work on project that promote ambassadorship in all possible forms.

Governance.  The NJ3 NEWS Fund will be governed by a steering committee that will allocate the funds on the need basis.

Steering Committee.  (SC) shall have at least three and no more than eleven members.  The initial SC shall be formed by inviting to be members each individual who has donated to the Fund up to the date on which the Fund is formally created.  Thereafter, the SC shall elect its own new members, who may be, but need not be, donors to the Fund.  In choosing new members, the SC will seek diversity and reliability of character, and a history of community activism.  Members serve 3 year terms, renewable.  SC shall elect its own chair annually.  Chair of the SC may appoint whatever committees necessary.  The SC is set to have 2 meeting a year.  SC chair shall be the official contact person. An assistant can be appointed directly by the chair in consensus with the SC.

Decision-making.  Quorum is 5/11 of SC membership.  Decisions are made by consensus where feasible.  If consensus is not reached in a timely way, decisions are made by a majority vote of those present when a quorum is present.  Proxy voting may be permitted.  All SC members must receive adequate advance notice of meetings.

Scholarship making.  NJ3 NEWS nominates scholarship recipients to SC board for approval.  Scholarship nominations are reported to the SC by the NJ3 News executive producer.  SC Board confirms that nominations are conformed and consistent with the NJ3 News Fund’s mission, and gives these nominations the same respect as nominees from the Community Foundation. The Community Foundation (CF) is allowed to nominate a maximum of 3 potential recipients outside the NJ3 News context and seek SC approval. These scholarships will follow the goals guidelines formulated in the “Goals” section.

Amendments.  NJ3 NEWS Fund, Mission Statement & Governance Procedures may be amended by the SC by a vote of a majority of the SC.
